Le Domaine
Pass through the gates.
Leave the world behind.
As the massive wooden gates close behind you and you pass through the listed 15th-century towers, you enter a place of peace and tranquillity unlike anywhere else in the Charente. Château Lesvescault was built on this site as the summer palace of the Bishops of Poitiers - a residence of consequence, set at the most important crossroads in Villefagnan, and listed as a Monument Historique since 1951.
What awaits you inside is extraordinary: magnificent French gardens with a 19th-century fountain, a heated saltwater pool, walled kitchen gardens, three beautifully appointed gîtes, and the kind of unhurried quiet that only centuries of stone can offer.
Adults only. Ten guests. One private domaine. Entirely yours.

The History
Five centuries of stone,
still standing.
The entrance to Château Lesvescault is unlike any other in Villefagnan. A substantial gateway - its round-arched form still bearing the original corbels that once supported a crenellated gallery - is flanked by two round towers that still carry vestiges of their medieval bretèches and machicolations. The small pedestrian door beside the arch is an original feature, unchanged for five hundred years.
Inside the towers, each ground floor is vaulted. The remains of the spiral staircase that once connected the crenellated gallery - located in a corbelled turret - still speak to the military and ecclesiastical ambitions of those who built here. The two round towers, entrance porch, and enclosing walls were officially listed as a Monument Historique by decree on 4 December 1951.
To stay here is not simply to visit a beautiful house. It is to sleep inside a piece of French history.

Villefagnan · circa 1940s
A Timeline
Six centuries in brief.
15th century
Construction
Château Lesvescault is built by the Bishops of Poitiers to serve as their summer residence and local manorial seat - a place of consequence, set at the most important crossroads in Villefagnan.
1601
The Le Coq Family
Aymar Le Coq is recorded as Lord of Les Roches. The Le Coq family - an old and distinguished family - would give rise to the Le Coq de Boisbaudran branch, whose most famous member would go on to discover the element gallium.
Mid-17th century
A Prosperous Residence
The house is leased for 1,600 livres - a considerable sum reflecting the standing of the property. A chapel with frescoes is documented on the site during this era.
1685
Bishop Hardouin Fortin de la Roquette
A document concerning the Ruffec hospital, signed by the Bishop of Poitiers while residing in Villefagnan, provides one of the clearest records of the property's use as an episcopal residence.
18th century
The Main House Rebuilt
The principal residential building seen today is largely rebuilt during this period, though it retains elements of its earlier medieval foundations - the stone bones of the original structure still present beneath.
19th century
Fire & Renovation
A significant fire destroys much of the interior, leading to extensive renovations that give the current rooms their distinctive French Revolutionary and American Federal aesthetic - the character the domaine carries to this day.
1951
Monument Historique
The two towers, entrance porch, and enclosing walls are officially listed as a Monument Historique by decree of 4 December 1951 - one of France's most important designations for architectural and historical heritage.

The Architecture
The towers. The walls. The gate.
The two round towers still bear vestiges of their medieval bretèches and machicolations - defensive features that speak to an era when this was not merely a bishop's summer residence, but a fortified seat of power. Pass through the gate and you pass through five centuries of unbroken history.

over centuries.

The French Gardens
At the heart of the domaine, a 19th-century stone fountain stands at the centre of four stunning rose garden parterres. Stroll through, settle into the beautiful gazebo, and share a glass of wine with your loved ones as the roses open around you.
The Cabanas & Pond
Further along, a shady cabana overlooks a classical pond with two bubbling fountains and a stone statue of Pan, the deity of the wild, playing his mythical flute - a peaceful spot for an afternoon of reading or quiet contemplation.
The Stone Wall Cabana
Against an ancient stone wall, a second cabana shelters a soft day bed - a place to curl up, read a book, or take an afternoon nap in the shade while the sounds of the garden drift in around you.

Le Domaine
The Heated Saltwater Pool
A 10m × 5m heated saltwater pool, fully equipped with sunloungers, tables, umbrellas, a shower, and a shade house to escape the golden midday sun. Beside it, the third cabana overlooks the pétanque court - a place to rest between rounds of boules with your fellow guests.
Pool towels included for every guest.
The Kitchen Garden
The walled potager.
Through a gate at the foot of the pool area, the beautiful walled potager unfolds - raised garden beds filled with summer vegetables, a long rose-covered pergola to wander beneath, a pretty greenhouse, and a sunflower garden that turns its face to the Charente sun.
At the end of the potager, behind a little garden house, is the Château des Poulets - the charming chicken coop, home to the sweet feathered residents who will provide you with fresh eggs in your welcome basket on arrival.

The Domaine
The Surroundings
The Charente beyond the walls.
Set at the most important crossroads in Villefagnan, the domaine sits in one of the quietest, most beautiful corners of south-west France. The rolling hills of the Charente stretch in every direction - ancient market towns, roads lined with plane trees, and skies that seem to go on forever.
Cognac is thirty minutes west. Angoulême half an hour south. But the most compelling reason to leave the domaine is simply to come back to it.
